Hawaiian Tropic Yuiko

• kitsunemimi=fox girl

• hai=an equivalent to "yes" in English, is nominally associated in Japanese as an affirmative term


• nya=Japanese onomatopoeia for the sound a cat makes, similar to "meow"


• -sama=Japanese social suffix, meant to indicate that the speaker is addressing a person of higher social ranking than themselves, such as a lord or master [in antiquity] or someone with leadership/caretaker duties

Midsummer on Lanai is rather quiet. That is until the tourists show up, anyway. But it's not so bad around June, so Kagami and Yuiko were traipsing through their favorite beach, surf boards in hand. The part of the island they were on was sparsely populated; it was mostly a local spot where the surfers hung out. So the beach was pristine and the water clear, perfect for catching a wave. But no sooner had Kagami come over a small ridge onto a grassy outcropping, did he notice the crowd of people hanging around the widest part of the beach.
"Kagi-sama, what is that?" Yuiko asked.
"I dunno…" he replied, "Maybe we should go investigate?"
Yuiko nodded and they moved ran up to the commotion started on an otherwise deserted beach. As they got closer to the crowd, Kagami noticed a long line of women in bikinis, several people running hither and tither with what looked like make-up kits and hairdryers. One young man was seen scuttling around with an umbrella attached to a tripod. Kagami couldn't make out what all that was going on, but he was getting the sense that this was not a normal everyday event. Getting ever closer to the assembled mob, they both saw what looked to be a wall erected on top of the sand. It was painted one one side with a beach scene, filled with a rippling ocean and loose, puffy clouds.
"Kagi-sama, look! Cameras!"
Yuiko directed Kagami's eyes toward a man working a camera in front of what appeared to be a judges panel. The panel consisted of two men and three women, one of which was in her own bikini. Kagami looked even further into the scene and saw security details parading around the outside of the mob, along with a business woman in a bright yellow pantsuit, who held a clipboard.
"Hmm, now this is interesting. It looks like a fashion shoot. But for who-?" Kagami started before Yuiko squealed in excitement.
"Kagai-sama! Kagi-sama! Look, it's a Hawaiian Tropic bikini contest!"
"Well, I'll be, so it is," he said, "But what are they doing on Lanai? Why not go to Honolulu or Maui? They have beaches, they have a peice of ocean. Why here?"
Yuiko responded with, "Well, maybe they couldn't find anyplace not clogged with tourists on Maui and Honolulu. It is summer on the mainland, right?"
"Right, just likes it's summer here on The Archipelago. Hmm, this is curious…"
Just then, the lady in yellow pantsuit spotted Kagami and Yuiko and shuffled over. She was not a clipboard, like Kagami first thought, but a tablet PC. The stylus for it was in her right hand while she cradled the tablet in her left.
"And who might you be?" she asked, all business.
"I'm Ka-"
"Nya! I'm Nokoa Yuiko! This is Nokoa Kagami, my master, nya. And who are you?"
"Oh, I'm no one of any import. I'm just here to take the names of our contestants. Are you going to sign up Miss No-k-oa?"
"It's No-koh-ah." Kagami corrected.
"Oh, oh, I wanna join! Kagi-sama, may I? Please?"
"Why would you wanna join in that?" Kagami said pointedly, "It's just a bunch of bleach blonde bimbos looking for a modeling break."
"Actually, " the business lady interjected, "we do have a number of brunettes and redheads entering…"
"Kagi-sama! Come on! It looks like fun! besides, I don't know if I can win. There are some really pretty ladies over there…"
"Hmm, I doth detect some comely lasses, yes. Hmm…"
Yuiko was now giving him her loving kitten routine. This was hard to fight against, because Yuiko would do her cutesy face, and glomp onto his arm and purr softly in his ear. It never failed to get him to okay something he would normally never think about.
"Pleeeeaaasssssssseeeee, Kagami-sama…?"
"*Sigh* Okay, Pretty Kitty. You can go and play Fashion Barbie for a while."
"YIPPEE!"
"But if you get disqualified, I wanna see you right back here, 'kay?"
"Hai, Kagi-sama!"
Yuiko then turned to the business lady and began filling out forms for the contest.

Yuiko had gotten lucky that several girls dropped from competition fairly early. Some where just not sexy enough for the judges, others had prior obligations that needed tending. No more than fifteen minutes after being officially entered into the contest, it was Yuiko's turn to impress the judges. Kagami watched fro the sidelines, immediately wishing had hadn't given consent to this nonsense. For every turn Yuiko made, there were twenty or so people rushing this and that, buffeting Kagami and leaving him feeling dizzy.
It was interesting to see that among the many human participants, that there were also some kemononekko, including three very lovely usagimimi, a very pretty kitsunemimi and one or two inumimi, as well as a cute red panda girl. Yuiko was thankfully the only nekomimi in the mix. But considering the plethora of beautiful women here, Kagami didn't know whether Yuiko stood a chance of placing in the contest.
Strangely enough, Yuiko got in inordinate amount of time with t he photographer. Kagami counted at least ten minutes before the judges asked him to stop. All the other girls were only given five minutes. Kagami thought this was strange, seeing as there were plenty of gorgeous women here to shoot and the afternoon light they were shooting in was getting darker and darker as dusk set in.
After about two more hours of shooting, Kagami certain they had broken curfew for now, all the contestants were sent home for the day. Yuiko was given a phone number from the judging pane that they told her was going to be used of they decided on having in the Hawaiian Tropic Bikini Calendar, which is what the contest was for.
"Well, we never did get to surf today." she said.
"It doesn't look like the tide was right for it anyway. Man, we are so breaking curfew…!"
"But it was worth it!", Yuiko declared, "I had a lot of fun, and you got to oogle the ladies!"
"If by oogling, you mean being assaulted by grips and gaffers all afternoon long, then yes, I did get to oogle some."
It was a long and talkative walk back to the car.

Three weeks later, during the height of tourist season, Yuiko got a letter in the mail. Much to Kagami surprise, Yuiko had won the contest. Even better, they were going to do two calendars with Yuiko: the main HT calendar, and another featuring Yuiko in Hawaiian Tropic's new kemononekko swimsuit line, Hula.
"Can you believe this, Kagi-sama?! I'm going to be a calendar girl! NYA!"

Author's note: According to some information I have found, Yuiko would need to be a few months short of eighteen to truly participate in any Hawaiian Tropic® contest. Thus noted, I believe that this particular event occurred just before Kagami and Yuiko's senior year. Seeing as Yuiko shares Kagami's birthday, the 28th of September , this event should have happened around July, 15th to July, 28th, some two months prior to their respective birthdays. (And in Yuiko's case, her unofficial birthday, becasue nobody knows when she was born.)
